Following deregulation of the buses Manchester was one of the most interesting places to witness the free-for-all. Not surprisingly as usual the big bus groups eventually smothered the many have-a-go operators. But they still do not have it all their own way and Stagecoach set up special a low fares operation using older buses called 'Magic Bus' to counteract a small rival who was offering cheap rides along the main student corridors.
