everywhere else the bus world had it's characters. One of these was the
Staffordshire Potteries proprietor Jim Berresford. Not only did he run
a fleet of elderly buses, when they finally gave up the ghost they were
put out to grass in a large field behind the garage and many partly cannibalised
hulks remained rotting away for several decades. This former Blackpool
Metro-Cammell Leyland PD2 had been standing out in the sun for so long
it's red Berresford livery had all but peeled off. It never happened to
me but I heard some enthusiasts were even charged fifty-pence to clamber
around the large treasure trove of broken glass, rust, and brambles. Berresford
also owned another local operator called Stonier of Goldenhill. They found
themselves in trouble with the area Traffic Commisioner because the public
complained that buses were ignoring intending passengers at bus stops.
When asked why they just went sailing by, the reason given was that if
the buses stopped they would not be able to keep to the timetable.
