Stafford as it was in about 1964. Unlike today where there are none the majority of the forty-four town's buses belonging to Midland Red were double-deck. Indeed apart from Sheepcote Street in Birmingham and later Markfield, Stafford had about the largest percentage of deckers on the system This was mainly due to the fact that most of the rural services were operated by either PMT who also ran seven buses from the town or Independants like G.H.Austin. But a fleet of seven saloons was still needed mainly for one of the routes to Rugeley and Lichfield where a low bridge was encountered at Colwich. This own built BMMO 1948 S8 bus though belonged to the smaller Lichfield Garage at the other end of the route and it would have been a cold ride back with no platform doors or saloon heating. |
