Siren of bisexuality
I love the art of the
Symbolists of the late Nineteenth Century. Subjects like sexuality which
we can discuss today quite openly were strictly taboo and artists borrowed
themes from mythology and superstition to express their feelings of longing,
sexual unrest and angst. As the ocean depths had yet to be explored it
held a deep fascination and folklore was ripe with tales of sea monsters,
sirens and mermaids who lured seamen overboard to a premature watery grave.
Some still find the transgendered or transsexual just as mysterious and
dangerous. The French painter Jean Delville would have depicted Jojo with
splayed legs offering her bottom and anus to lustful sin as she sinks
further into her depravity. It is certainly one of my most beautiful and
teasingly homoerotic images and catches the frustration I feel sometimes
not being gay.
